EDAWU Community Mental Health Care, Nigeria

ACCEPT's mission includes enabling EDAWU, NIGERIA, to achieve its goal of providing effective rehabilitation as well as implementing accessible, affordable and sustainable systems of mental healthcare in their area.

The need

Those experiencing mental health problems in developing countries are some of the most stigmatised and abused people in society. It is common for such individuals to be whipped, chained, physically confined or found wandering the streets without a home.

Centre for Rehabilitation

Edawu is a 16 bedded therapeutic community centre for those who have become homeless due to mental health problems.

Psychiatric Clinics

Edawu also runs Psychiatric Clinics, providing medication and support for people living in the community experiencing mental health problems as well as discharged residents.

ACCEPT's role in supporting Edawu, includes:
  • Co-ordinating visits to and from Nigeria.
  • Liaising with staff from the Leicestershire Partnership NHS Trust (LPT), who have an "international link" with Edawu.
  • Communicating with Edawu's Welfare Officer / Manager, on a regular basis by e-mail / telephone.
  • Raising awareness of Edawu to individuals and churches.
  • Holding fundraising events.
  • Networking with other organizations who have connections with mental health / Nigeria / the developing world.
